Last week we took a brief look at how physics of the arms in your golf swing can improve ball striking and power without swinging any harder…perfect for golfers over 50 years old. Today we will do the same with leg mechanics.
Our golf clients are all over 45 years old because that is what we have specialized in since 2008. The bodies of golfers in this age group are very different than younger golfers. The joints move differently, the elasticity of muscles is different, the spine moves differently, the body as a whole responds differently to training. And it naturally follows that golf instruction should be different.
OK, lets take a look at the right leg position at the top of the backswing with the two pictures. Can you tell the difference? One picture shows our golfer (60 years old) with good mechanics and the other shows the breakdown of mechanics that we see time and time again in golfers between 50 and 75 years old. It’s probably pretty obvious to you that the first golfers mechanics are breaking down. Are you able to see how the golf position in the second picture is a position that will deliver more power to the ball?
The difference is that when golfers have poor range of motion in their hips, in their thoracic spine (mid back), or poor core strength, they are unable to keep their weight on the INSIDE of their back foot at the top of the backswing. Many names have been given to this fault including “reverse pivot shift,” “swaying”, etc.
If our golfer was hitting a driver the swing speed difference would be in the range of 12-15mph …..that’s 30 yards!!!
