So to with your golf body. I don’t want you to regret putting off golf exercise and flexibility. In this article, I am going to explain the consequences of neglect that I have experienced working with golfers and patients over the years.
The first thing that you must realize, is the body is not static. It is always changing and it never stops changing.
In other words, if you are not getting stronger, you are getting weaker. If you are not improving your flexibility, your flexibility is getting worse.
Most people blame “age” too much for physical changes. Instead, the physical changes that are associated with “age,” are more the result of not working on improving the golf body. Stiffness more the result of not working on flexibility than it is “age.”
The Senior Golfer
Where “age” plays a major role is that as the golfer gets older, it becomes more difficult to correct what has been neglected. It is much easier to maintain flexibility by stretching, than it is to regain flexibility.
And this is why I work with a lot of people with regrets. “I wish I would have worked on this before it became a problem.” Most people address a problem, only when it becomes a crisis. Golfers start working on the golf body only when the golf body has broken down.
That seems to be human nature, but it is so much more difficult. And unfortunately, sometimes it is too late.
For instance, sometimes a lifetime neglecting posture leads to early disability due to chronic and repeated spinal fractures from posture putting too much pressure on the front of the spine. Ladies watch out! You are a higher risk than men.
Golf and Posture
In golf, poor posture puts the spine into a position in which it can no longer rotate. If you can’t rotate your spine, you can count on a 50% reduction in golf power and a loss of consistency.
Did you know that the average person loses 10 pounds of muscle per decade if they are not exercising! Muscles being the driver of metabolism, a loss of 10 pounds of fat burning muscle with destroy your metabolism. Thus answering why body fat increases as you age even if you are eating less!!
So if you are the same weight you where 30 years ago and you have not been exercising, you can bet that approximately 30 lbs of muscle has been replaced with approximately 30 lbs of that nasty three letter word that starts with an F and ends with a T.
Taking Care of the Golf Body
But back to the golf body. This is the regret I do not want you to have. I don’t want you to turn 60 and have to relegate yourself to playing “old man” golf. Hitting short drives, laying up to par 3’s, and having to rest a day to recover from 18 holes of golf. I don’t want you to turn 70 years old and be thinking about giving up golf because it is no longer fun to play anymore.
I don’t want to hear anymore regret stories (although I know I will). I hope you are receptive to this advice to act now.
Remember, the body is not static. If you do not act now, it will be that much tougher to act tomorrow. Your body is changing…right now! Which direction are YOU going to change?
