Correctable Senior Golf Swing Limitations

Review this short article to find out if you need the intervention of an Age Defying Golf Expert! Have you lost distance and golf, power and golf, or is golf instruction not resolving your golf performance issues?

I was too busy to play golf this past weekend, but since we had some really nice weather, I made time to tune up my golf swing on our driving range. I took a breather and looked around at the variety of swings taken by golfers on the range(I don’t know if you have ever done this but it is very interesting).

I could pick out around 5, easily correctable, swing faults per golfer. Which is not surprising because the golf swing is a complex motion. What was interesting was the reactions. People were getting very upset and frustrated with their results. I could understand being upset with the results but the surprising part is that they were expecting good results with a poor swing.

Too give you an obvious example to make my point: this expectation is similar to if I was playing baseball and trying to hit a fastball from Sandy Koufax…with my eyes closed. Every now and again I will probably get lucky and hit the ball, but should I get frustrated if I miss it. Of course not, I am not setup up to be consistent.

Similarly, even a golf swing with mechanical faults will some days come together and produce a good result. But you will never be able to be consistent. As a result, poorly hit golf shots should not surprise the golfer who has poor golf mechanics….no matter how much he/she practices!!!

In fact, the more you practice with poor golf mechanics, the more engrained those mechanics become. Not only is practice not beneficial, but practicing with poor golf mechanics is bad for your golf swing.

I realize working on your golf mechanics and changing your golf swing is not that much fun. In fact, it can be very frustrating at first. But in the end, playing good and consistent golf is SO MUCH MORE FUN than playing bad golf.

Golfers over 50 are more susceptible to golf swing faults because the body is more limited in what it can achieve…unless you address the right issue. Golfers over 50 develop unique golf swing problems and we are going to take a look at a couple right here.

The Over 50 Golf Swing

compensated swing at address

OK. I have posted articles about these and will address them again. But for now, I am just going to give you the quick and dirty run down on issues we see everyday with golfers over 50:

  • Flexed mid back(thoracic spine): major loss in backswing rotation
  • Head tilted down: poor clearance on backswing

Compensated Swing

  • Elbow collapse at the top and golf shaft passing parallel
  • R knee rotation
  • R foot supination (rolling to the outside)
  • Loss of secondary spine angle and lateral weight shift

compensated swing right elbow

  • Flying right elbow
  • Swing plane too steep

compensated swing torso rotation

  • Poor rotation: no power
  • Collapsed elbows again

compensated swing belt buckle

  • Loss of full rotation in follow through indicated by belt buckle position

This is the comprehensive list of “old guy/gal” swing faults. Nobody has all these faults but you may find a couple in your swing. The reason these faults are more common in golfers over 50 is due to a combination of poor flexibility, posture issues, and a couple areas of weakness.

You don’t have to become the “old guy” on the course. You can still play great golf and have a lot of fun smashing the golf ball and putting for birdies.

Age Defying Golf was created for golfers over 50 to have fun on the golf course.

QUESTION: HAVE YOU FOUND ANY “AGE RELATED” GOLF SWING FAULTS IN YOUR GOLF SWING? ARE YOU GOING TO CONTINUE TO PRACTICE WITH SAME MECHANICS THAT MAKE YOU CRAZY WITH INCONSISTENCY OR ARE YOU READY TO PLAY GREAT GOLF?
