The PGA Tour Championship is one of the most exclusive golf tournaments in the PGA Tour season. In the past before the 2007 season, inclusion is limited to 30 of the top money winners of the Tour. From then until the present, inclusion is dependent on the amassed FedEx Cup points during the regular season of the Tour plus the three earlier playoff events.
Since 2009, any of the top 5 points leaders in the FedEx Cup heading into the PGA Tour Championship will also win the FedEx Cup if they win the Tour Championship. This is because of the assignment and awarding of points. This is just like in 2007 when Tiger Woods won the inaugural FedEx Cup and the Tour Championship.
On the other hand, it’s also possible that there’ll be one winner for each just like in 2008 when Vijay Singh won the FedEx Cup and Camilo Villegas won the Tour Championship.
The tournament follows the Stroke play format. Since 2004, it calls the East Lake Golf Club as its home. The 7,346 yard golf course is a par 70 one. This course had its share of controversy, as fans called out its lack of drama on the par 3 18th hole. This is why the PGA Tour reversed the nines so that the 18th hole will be a more dramatic par 5 hole.
The tournament has been traditionally held every September. Starting 2019, the tournament will be held in the middle of August as part of the massive overhaul in the golf schedule of the PGA Tour. This is to take advantage of the lack of sporting events played in August.
